How We Source High-Quality Ingredients for a Custom Formula

It’s crucial for brand owners to understand the significance of incorporating high-quality ingredients into their formulas. Cutting corners or delivering subpar products can potentially harm your brand’s reputation and customer trust. At Vitaquest, we are unwavering in our commitment to safeguarding your brand’s integrity. To achieve this, we go to great lengths to ensure that only the finest raw materials, ingredients, and strains are meticulously selected for the products we produce.

Our approach to sourcing encompasses a global network of partners who are at the forefront of ingredient science. These partners not only adhere to industry best practices, but also strictly comply with FDA requirements.

Raw Materials from Natural Sources

The top-grade products we produce for our clients start with superior ingredients, exceeding identity, potency, and quality benchmarks. Our in-house lab swiftly analyzes raw materials, ensuring accuracy and reliability. Using spectroscopy and chromatography, we verify labeling and standards with specialized tests like genetic ID and DNA barcoding. Rigorous screenings for adulterants, solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals are routine. Our advanced tools encompass FT-IR, HPTLC, UPLC-MS/MS, GC-MS, and more for precise identification and contaminant analysis. Integrated LIMS documents the process thoroughly.

Sourcing the Right Active Ingredients

We focus on sourcing the right active ingredient for every custom probiotic supplement formula to address specific concerns and develop targeted formulas that meet customer demands.

Common Probiotic Strains

Probiotic supplements have been gaining popularity among consumers due to the numerous health benefits they promote. As a result, probiotic manufacturers and labs have discovered unique and exciting probiotic strains that brand owners can use to meet the demands of increasingly sophisticated consumers. Here are just a few of more than 100 probiotic strains that we formulate with at Vitaquest:

Lactoibacillus rhamnosus

Present throughout your digestive tract, Lactoibacillus rhamnosus is uniquely adapted to survive in acidic and basic conditions within the human body, giving it a higher survival chance and long-term benefits. It can also help create strong barriers to prevent pathogens from becoming an established part of the body’s microbial community. Beyond the human body, you can also find Lactobacillus rhamnosus in semi-hard cheeses, fermented milk, and yogurts.

Potential benefits of Lactobacillus rhamnosus include:

  • Combating over-acidic stomach
  • Preventing occasional diarrhea
  • Aiding overall gut health
  • Protecting against dental cavities
  • Promoting urinary tract health

Bifidobacterium longum

Commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract and vagina, Bifidobacterium longum helps regulate pH levels in the gut. It primarily grows in environments with low oxygen supply and works by producing lactic acid via the fermentation of sugars. Fermented dairy products and fermented vegetables are common natural sources of Bifidobacterium longum.

Potential health benefits of Bifidobacterium longum include:

  • Supporting a healthy immune system
  • Promoting digestion and gut health
  • Protecting against occasional gastrointestinal distress

Lactobacillus helveticus

Lactobacillus helveticus is lactic acid bacteria commonly present in the gut. It is a non-motile gram-positive bacterium that aids in breaking down food and nutrient absorption. Naturally found in fermented foods, certain cheeses, milk, kefir, and buttermilk.

Potential health benefits of Lactobacillus helveticus include:

  • Promoting a healthy gut
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Fighting harmful bacteria to protect against infections
  • Aiding nutrient absorption and metabolism

Lactococcus lactis

Although Lactococcus lactis is in the lactic acid bacteria family, it usually does not naturally colonize human tissue, so daily replenishment is advised, either from supplements or fermented foods.

Lactococcus lactis promotes many potential health benefits including:

  • Maintaining a healthy metabolic balance
  • Aiding digestion
  • Promoting a healthy immune system
  • Supporting skin health
  • Combating age-related changes to bone density, weight, and hearing

Bifidobacterium breve

Primarily beneficial for babies and young children, Bifidobacterium breve is commonly present in human breast milk and in the gastrointestinal tracts of adults. Its primary function is to break down otherwise indigestible Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO) and, thus, the population of Bifidobacterium breve in the gut decreases as we age.

Some of the natural sources of Bifidobacterium breve are kefir, kombucha, and raw sauerkraut.

The reported health benefits of consuming Bifidobacterium breve-rich foods or supplements are:

  • Enhancing mineral assimilation
  • Assisting the body’s healthy response to inflammation
  • Aiding in digestion for children and adults
  • Improving skin health

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Bifidobacterium bifidum is the second most prominent microorganism species in breastfed infants, with its levels decreasing with age. Natural sources of this probiotic include fermented foods and milk products, cured meats, certain wines and vinegars, sauerkraut, and sourdough bread.

The potential health benefits of Bifidobacterium bifidum include:

  • Improving gut health and microbiota
  • Enhancing mineral assimilation
  • Protecting against inflammation in the colon
  • Promoting a healthy gut
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Fighting harmful bacteria to protect against infections
  • Aiding nutrient absorption and metabolism

How We Maintain Quality Assurance Throughout the Probiotic Supplement Manufacturing Process

private label manufacturers

At Vitaquest, we are committed to delivering the next standard of quality in health supplement development by pursuing trust, transparency, and excellence throughout our work.

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is one of the most important tools that can help probiotics manufacturers ensure efficient manufacturing practices and acceptable quality and safety of the probiotic products before their introduction to the market. It also ensures consistent product quality and can help regulatory agencies assess the manufacturers and their probiotic products.

Quality Control Procedures and Tests

At Vitaquest, our commitment to quality goes beyond just cGMP certification as we employ a wide range of testing methodologies to ensure the identity, quality, purity, and potency of the probiotic ingredients we use. Probiotic raw materials go through:

  • Strain-specific identification testing (genetic ID testing or DNA barcoding) of every probiotic ingredient.
  • Potency and viability testing (CFU plating and/or flow cytometry) of probiotic ingredients and finished products.
  • Water Activity and Moisture content.

These tests ensure that our probiotic ingredients meet our high-quality standards for incorporation into our formulations. Our probiotic manufacturing processes incorporate gentle handling and great care for the delicate living probiotic organisms. Manufacturing in dedicated, low-humidity production suites preserves and maintains product potency and stability throughout shelf life.

Probiotic Manufacturing FAQs

Are shelf-stable probiotics as good as refrigerated?

Probiotics are temperature and humidity sensitive; however, the degree of impact of these changes depends on the individual probiotic strain, the product formulation, dosage, and packaging. Most of our products are shelf-stable for two years, and that is made possible by our use of stable probiotic strains, generous potency overages, and our low-moisture and temperature-controlled manufacturing environment. Both shelf-stable and refrigerated probiotics manufactured by Vitaquest can be equally effective.

Prebiotics are supplements containing certain dietary fiber ingredients that can stimulate the activity (or growth) of helpful gut bacteria.

Probiotics are supplements containing viable microorganisms that can alter the gut microflora in ways that are favorable to human health.

Postbiotics are by-products and metabolites obtained from the biological activity of probiotic microorganisms. Postbiotics include B-vitamins, amino acids, immune factors, and short chain fatty acids that help to maintain colon health.

Since probiotics fall under the category of nutritional (or dietary) supplements – and are not intended to cure specific conditions – the FDA does not approve them before entering the market. However, FDA does regulate supplement manufacturing and labeling under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Food Safety regulations, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and food labeling laws.

CFU in probiotics stands for colony forming units. CFU is a reliable indication of the number of viable cells in a probiotic supplement. Many probiotic supplements offer 5-50 billion CFU per serving, but there can be great variation, depending on the strains used.
