Trending Supplement Categories in 2026
Plant-Based Protein Supplements
The global plant-based protein market was valued at $14.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $20.5 billion by 2029, with a CAGR of 7.5%.3Plant-based Protein Market. Markets And Markets. Retrieved January 24, 2025 from https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/Market-Reports/plant-based-protein-market-14715651.html.
Several key factors are driving this growth. First, plant-based proteins are an ideal option for vegans and vegetarians seeking alternatives to animal-derived proteins such as whey and casein. Second, sustainability is a significant motivator, as plant-based proteins generally have a lower environmental impact. Lastly, these proteins offer low allergenic potential, making them accessible to individuals with sensitivities to dairy or other common allergens.
The most common sources of plant-based protein in supplements include peas and rice.
Pea Protein
Pea protein is well known for its high protein content and excellent digestibility.4Gausserès N, Mahè S, Benamouzig R, Luengo C, Drouet H, Rautureau J, Tomè D. The gastro-ileal digestion of 15N-labelled pea nitrogen in adult humans. Br J Nutr. 1996 Jul;76(1):75-85. Clinical studies show that pea protein isolate can effectively reduce food intake5Smith CE, Mollard RC, Luhovyy BL, Anderson GH. The effect of yellow pea protein and fibre on short-term food intake, subjective appetite and glycaemic response in healthy young men. Br J Nutr. 2012 Aug;108 Suppl 1:S74-80. when consumed at the beginning of a meal, outperforming whey and egg white proteins in this regard.6Abou-Samra R, Keersmaekers L, Brienza D, Mukherjee R, Macé K. Effect of different protein sources on satiation and short-term satiety when consumed as a starter. Nutr J. 2011 Dec 23;10:139. 7Diepvens K, Häberer D, Westerterp-Plantenga M. Different proteins and biopeptides differently affect satiety and anorexigenic/orexigenic hormones in healthy humans. Int J Obes (Lond). 2008 Mar;32(3):510-8. In addition, research8Claessens M, Calame W, Siemensma AD, Saris WH, van Baak MA. The thermogenic and metabolic effects of protein hydrolysate with or without a carbohydrate load in healthy male subjects. Metabolism. 2007 Aug;56(8):1051-9. demonstrated that pea protein promoted diet-induced thermogenesis (fat burning). Research9Li H, Prairie N, Udenigwe CC, Adebiyi AP, Tappia PS, Aukema HM, Jones PJ, Aluko RE. Blood pressure lowering effect of a pea protein hydrolysate in hypertensive rats and humans. J Agric Food Chem. 2011 Sep 28;59(18):9854-60. also demonstrated that pea protein helped maintain healthy blood pressure levels already within normal ranges more significantly than consuming a placebo. In animal studies10Feng T, Huang Y, Tang Z, Wei D, Mo J. Anti-fatigue effects of pea (Pisum sativum L.) peptides prepared by compound protease. J Food Sci Technol. 2021 Jun;58(6):2265-2272. doi: 10.1007/s13197-020-04737-3. Epub 2020 Aug 19. PMID: 33967323; PMCID: PMC8076353., pea protein also showed strong anti-fatigue effects, decreased lactic acid, increased muscle and liver glycogen, improved insulin levels, and had strong antioxidant and immune activity.
In the past, pea protein’s popularity was hindered by its earthy or bitter taste. However, recent advances in flavor-masking technologies and extraction methods have significantly improved its organoleptic profile. Through enzymatic processing, microencapsulation, and natural masking agents, pea protein powder manufacturers can now greatly reduce the off-notes traditionally associated with pea protein, making it a more viable option for flavored powders, ready-to-drink beverages, and functional foods.
Rice Protein
Rice protein is considered to be hypoallergenic11Michelet M, Schluckebier D, Petit LM, Caubet JC. Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome – a review of the literature with focus on clinical management. J Asthma Allergy. 2017 Jun 27;10:197-207., and provides approximately 78% protein by weight, including 36% essential amino acids and 18% branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs).12Purpura M, Lowery RP, Joy JM, De Souza EO, Kalman DS, et al. (2014) A Comparison of Blood Amino Acid Concentrations Following Ingestion of Rice and Whey Protein Isolate: A Double-Blind Crossover Study. J Nutr Health Sci 1(3): 306. doi: 10.15744/2393-9060.1.306 Research shows rice protein isolate can support reductions in fat mass while increasing lean body mass, skeletal muscle hypertrophy, power, and strength—with outcomes comparable to whey protein isolate.13Joy JM, Lowery RP, Wilson JM, et al. The effects of 8 weeks of whey or rice protein supplementation on body composition and exercise performance. Nutr J. 2013; 12: 86. In a comparative study14Kalman D, Escalante A. P34 The body composition effects of extra protein in elite mixed martial artists undergoing frequent training over a six-week period. JISSN. 2017;14(Suppl 2):31., rice protein demonstrated similar effects on body weight and fat-free mass as whey, with a slight advantage in reducing body fat, although not statistically significant.
Nootropic Supplements
Nootropic supplements, formulated to enhance memory, focus, and overall cognitive performance, continue to gain momentum in the health and wellness space. The global nootropic supplement market was valued at $2.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $5 billion by 2034, with a CAGR of 7.8% from 2025 through 2034.15Nootropic Supplement Market Size – By Type, Ingredient Type, Function, Distribution Channel Analysis, Share, Growth Forecast, 2025 – 2034. Global Market Insights. Retrieved June 4, 2025 from https://www.gminsights.com/industry-analysis/nootropic-supplements-market.
This category encompasses a wide range of nutraceutical compounds, many of which are backed by strong scientific evidence supporting their cognitive benefits. Among the most well-researched and widely used nootropics are Rhodiola rosea, Bacopa monnieri, and Lion’s Mane mushroom. Each offers distinct mechanisms to support mental clarity, memory, stress resilience, and neurological health.
Rhodiola
Rhodiola rosea is a well-established adaptogen, a class of substances, often herbal in origin, that help the body maintain balance and adapt to physical, emotional, and environmental stressors. While adaptogens generally do not exert a specific pharmacological action, they are known to support homeostasis and overall resilience.
Used for centuries in traditional medicine systems across Russia, Scandinavia, and other regions, Rhodiola rosea has a long history of supporting both mental and physical well-being.16Brown RP, Gerbarg PL, Ramazanov Z. Rhodiola rosea: A Phytomedicinal Overview. HerbalGram 2002; 56:40-52. Modern research has confirmed its ability to enhance cognitive function under stress, improve mental performance, and increase physical endurance. Clinical studies also suggest that Rhodiola may help reduce fatigue, boost mood, enhance work productivity, and even support aspects of sexual health, particularly in individuals experiencing stress-related declines in performance.17Darbinyan V, Kteyan A, Panossian A, Gabrielian E, Wikman G, Wagner H. Bacopa
The leaves of the Bacopa monnieri plant have been used for centuries in the traditional East Indian system of healthcare (Ayurveda) for purposes of promoting “healthy longevity, and strengthening life, brain, and mind.”20Engels G, Brinckmann J. Bacopa. HerbalGram. 2011;91:1-4.
Modern clinical studies21Morgan A, Stevens J. Does Bacopa monnieri Improve Memory Performance in Older Persons? Results of a Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Trial. Research28Stough C, Lloyd J, Clarke J, Downey LA, Hutchison CW, Rodgers T, Nathan PJ. The chronic effects of an extract of Bacopa monniera (Brahmi) on cognitive function in healthy human subjects. Psychopharmacology (Berl). 2001 Aug;156(4):481-4. suggests that Bacopa works by helping to maintain healthy levels of acetylcholine, a compound the body makes to help the brain facilitate memory, learning ability and cognitive performance.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom
Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a functional mushroom traditionally used to support immune health and provide antioxidant protection against oxidative stress caused by free radicals.29Natural Health Product. Mushrooms. Health Canada. March 25, 2019: 28 pp. In recent years, it has gained significant attention for its potential cognitive benefits.30Saitsu Y, Nishide A, Kikushima K, Shimizu K, Ohnuki K. Improvement of cognitive functions by oral intake of Hericium erinaceus. Biomed Res. 2019;40(4):125-131. 31Mori K, Inatomi S, Ouchi K, Azumi Y, Tuchida T. Improving effects of the mushroom Yamabushitake (Hericium erinaceus) on mild cognitive impairment: a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial. Phytother Res. 2009 Mar;23(3):367-72.
One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed that it improved cognitive function, while another showed that participants taking Lion’s mane scored significantly higher on cognitive function tests compared to the placebo group. In addition, research demonstrated that Lion’s mane may help reduce moodiness.32Nagano M, Shimizu K, Kondo R, Hayashi C, Sato D, Kitagawa K, Ohnuki K. Postbiotics
Postbiotics (any probiotic that has been pasteurized or heat-treated, and yet still provides health benefits—a sort of zombie probiotic) are gaining popularity. The postbiotic supplements market is estimated to be valued at $10.8 million in 2024 and expected to reach $30.5 million by 2034 at a CAGR of 10.9%.33Postbiotic Supplements Market. Future Market Insights, Inc. Retrieved June 21, 2024 from https://www.futuremarketinsights.com/reports/postbiotic-supplements-market. Since they’re no longer alive, postbiotics have the advantage since there is no concern for stability as is the case with probiotics. Consequently, they can easily be used in virtually any delivery form and combined with any other nutraceutical. Two examples of postbiotics with research to support their efficacy include:
- Lactobacillus plantarum strain L-137 (ImmunoLP20®) has been shown to augment acquired immunity34Hirose Y, Murosaki S, Yamamoto Y, et al. Daily Intake of Heat-Killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 Augments Acquired Immunity in Healthy Adults. J Nutr. 2006; 136: 3069–3073. (especially Th1-related immune functions in healthy subjects), support the function of an influenza vaccine35Arimori Y, Nakamura R, Hirose Y, et al. Daily intake of heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 enhances type I interferon production in healthy humans and pigs. Immunopharmacol Immunotoxicol. 2012 Dec;34(6):937-43., support upper respiratory health36Hirose Y, Yamamoto Y, Yoshikai Y, Murosaki S. Oral intake of heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 decreases the incidence of upper respiratory tract infection in healthy subjects with high levels of psychological stress. J Nutr Sci. 2013; 2: e39., and help reduce inflammatory markers.37Tanaka Y, Hirose Y, Yamamoto Y, et al. Daily intake of heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 improves inflammation and lipid metabolism in overweight healthy adults: a randomized-controlled trial. Eur J Nutr. 2020 Sep;59(6):2641-2649.
- Akkermansium mucinipahila has been shown to support metabolic health, helps activate GLP-1 inducing protein, help decrease body weight, help decrease hip and waist size.38Depommier C, Everard A, Druart C, Plovier H, Van Hul M, Vieira-Silva S et al (2019) Supplementation with Akkermansia muciniphila in overweight and obese human volunteers: a proof-of-concept exploratory study. Nat Med 25(7):1096–1103.
GLP-1 Stimulants/Complements
Anyone who attended Natural Products Expo West in March of 2025, or VitaFoods in May of 2025, won’t be surprised that nutraceuticals with claims to stimulate the production of GLP-1 were seriously trending. Booths offering such nutraceuticals were all over the place. It should be noted that nutraceuticals that stimulate GLP-1 production aren’t the same as, and won’t have similar efficacy for appetite suppression, as drugs that are GLP-1 agonists (i.e., bind to GLP-1 receptors). Nevertheless, many of these nutraceuticals may still offer other benefits for weight loss. Furthermore, there is a range of nutraceuticals that aren’t GLP-1 stimulants but may also function in a complementary way with GLP-1 agonist drugs. Consider the following:
- Akkermansium mucinipahila – As stated in the previous section, Akkermansium mucinipahila is a GLP-1 that helps with weight loss, but not necessarily appetite suppression.
- Collagen – Sagging skin can occur alongside rapid weight loss, such as occurs with the use of GLP-1 agonist drugs. As a structural protein, it is ideal for combating saggy skin. Collagen peptides have been shown39Proksch E, Schunck M, Zague V, Segger D, Degwert J, Oesser S. Oral intake of specific bioactive collagen peptides reduces skin wrinkles and increases dermal matrix synthesis. Skin Pharmacol Physiol. 2014;27(3):113-9. to support and stimulate the body’s own collagen production and skin elasticity.
- Creatine – Maintaining lean muscle during rapid weight loss can be a challenge. Creatine serves as an anabolic signal for muscle growth, acting as the chemical messenger that links increased muscle activity with the production of new muscle tissue.40Fry D, Morales M. A reexamination of the effects of creatine on muscle protein synthesis in tissue culture. J Cell Biol. 1980; 84(2): 294-297. 41Ingwall JS, Weiner CD, Morales ED, Stockdale FE. Specificity of creatine in the control of muscle protein synthesis. J Cell Biol. 1974;62(1): 145-151.
Women’s Health (Urinary Health, Menopause, Fertility)
The global women’s health and beauty supplements market generated a revenue of $57.4 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $77.5 billion by 2030.42Global Women’s Health And Beauty Supplements Market Size & Outlook. Horizon Grand View Research. Retrieved June 26, 2025 from https://www.grandviewresearch.com/horizon/outlook/womens-health-and-beauty-supplements-market-size/global Specific areas of interest within this category are urinary health, menopause, and fertility.
Urinary Health
Simply due to internal plumbing differences, women tend to have more concerns about urinary tract health than men and so represent a major part of the urinary health supplement market, which was estimated at $1.77 billion in 2023 and expected to grow to $3.04 billion by 2030.43Urology Supplements Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report By Type (Multi-ingredient, Single Ingredient), By Application (Urinary Tract Infections, Kidney Health, Prostate Health), By Formulation, By Distribution Channel, By Region, And Segment Forecasts, 2024 – 2030. A few good nutraceuticals with particularly good research for promoting urinary tract health include:
- Cranberry extract – Cranberry extract has been clinically tested to promote and maintain urinary tract health in women. This is particularly true of those providing at least 72 mg of PACs, the active components in cranberry.44Howell AB, Botto H, Combescure C, Blanc-Potard AB, Gausa L, Matsumoto T, Tenke P, Sotto A, Lavigne JP. Menopause
With the aging of America54The U.S. Joins Other Countries With Large Aging Populations. United States Census Bureau. March 13, 2018. Retrieved June 26, 2025 from https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2018/03/graying-america.html#:~:text=Although%20declining%20fertility%20plays%20a,as%20older%20adults%20outnumber%20kids., roughly 2 million women per year are starting menopause.55Pausing to learn more about menopause. Consequently, natural remedies for menopause are becoming increasingly popular. While there are many menopause support nutraceuticals from which to choose, three especially good ones include:
- Rheum rhaponticum L. root extract (Siberian Rhubarb) – In clinical research, Siberian Rhubarb helped relieve hot flashes by 60-90% in 12 weeks. It also helped relieve menopause-related night sweats while promoting vaginal comfort and healthy sexual function in menopausal women.56Heger M, Ventskovskiy BM, Borzenko I, Kneis KC, Rettenberger R, Kaszkin-Bettag M, Heger PW. - Black Cohosh extract (root) – Black cohosh is probably the most widely used nutraceutical for menopause, with research demonstrating significant relief of menopausal symptoms. These include relief from hot flashes and night sweats, as well as menopause-related nervousness and moodiness.61Ross SM. Fertility
Many women are concerned with maintaining a healthy state of fertility, as reflected in the fact that the global fertility supplements market for women is substantial and growing. In 2023, it was valued at $2.05 billion and is projected to reach $3.52 billion by 2030.67Fertility Supplements Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report By Ingredient Type, Product Type, By End-user, By Distribution Channel, By Region, And Segment Forecasts, 2024 – 2030. Grand View Research. Retrieved June 26, 2025 from https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/fertility-supplements-market. There are a broad number of nutraceutical options for such supplements, but here are three good ones:
- Chaste berry (Vitex agnus castus) – A clinical study on chaste berry extract was conducted with women who had fertility concerns. The results were that pregnancy, healthy menstruation, or improved concentrations of luteal hormones were achieved in 31 out of 66 women who were suitable for evaluation. 15 women conceived during the observation period.68Gerhard II, Patek A, Monga B, et al. Mastodynon for female infertility. (abstract) Forsch Komplementarmed 1998;5:272-8.
- Maca – This herb has a history of use for women’s sexual function. Maca’s fertility-enhancing properties were first described in 1653.69Gonzales GF. Ethnobiology and Ethnopharmacology of Lepidium meyenii (Maca), a Plant from the Peruvian Highlands. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2012; 2012: 193496. Some research70Stojanovska L, Law C, Lai B, et al. Maca reduces blood pressure and depression, in a pilot study in postmenopausal women. Climacteric. 2015;18(1):69-78. suggests Maca supports healthy levels of fertility hormones. In one study, it raised levels of estrogen and lowered levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).71Meissner HO, Mscisz A, Reich-Bilinska H, et al. Hormone-Balancing Effect of Pre-Gelatinized Organic Maca (Lepidium peruvianum Chacon): (II) Physiological and Symptomatic Responses of Early-Postmenopausal Women to Standardized doses of Maca in Double Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Multi-Centre Clinical Study. Int J Biomed Sci. 2006;2(4):360-374. Lower levels of FSH are linked to a greater chance of pregnancy.
- Vitamin D – Lower vitamin D levels were associated with more women not conceiving easily on their own, according to a 2017 study.72Fung JL, et al. Association of vitamin D intake and serum levels with fertility: results from the Lifestyle and Fertility Study. Fertility and Sterility. 2017; 108(2): 302 – 311/ If you’re already pregnant, you can develop complications if your vitamin D levels aren’t within normal parameters. Another study reported that women with low levels of vitamin D had higher blood pressure in pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, and gestational diabetes than women with normal vitamin D levels.73Purswani J, Gala P, Dwarkanath P, et al. The role of vitamin D in pre-eclampsia: a systematic review. BMC Pregnancy Childbirth. 2017; 17: 231. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12884-017-1408-3
Sleep Support
The size of the global sleep support supplement market was valued at $7.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% to $12.9 by 2030.74Weight Loss Supplement Market Trends. Grand View Research. Retrieved May 23, 2024 from https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/weight-loss-supplements-market-report. Examples of three evidence-based nutraceuticals that support healthy sleep and can be used in supplements include:
- Phytomelatonin – Plant-derived melatonin (or phytomelatonin from St. John’s wort or tomatoes) offers a natural alternative to synthetic melatonin, while still providing the sleep-supportive properties. In fact, 1 mg and 3 mg of phytomelatonin were shown to be as effective as or more effective than 10 mg of synthetic melatonin in specific cohorts of participants in a large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.75Pauli EK, et al. A Randomized, Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Direct to-Consumer Study of Health and Wellness Products on Sleep and Other Health Outcomes. Radicle Science. 2024; unpublished. In another study, participants fell asleep 33% faster when using phytomelatonin derived from tomato fruit extract.76De Jesus M, Berquist K, Bruno G. Effects of Somato® tomato fruit extract on key physiological and psychological domains associated with sleep quality, autonomic function, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) – A Pilot Study. 2025. Submitted for publication.
- Glycine – Supplementation with glycine has been shown to help lower body core temperature, which makes it easier to fall asleep.77Bannai M, Kawai N. New therapeutic strategy for amino acid medicine: glycine improves the quality of sleep. J Pharmacol Sci. 2012;118(2):145-148. doi:10.1254/jphs.11r04fm
- GABA – This nutraceutical helps create a sense of relaxation78Abdou AM, Higashiguchi S, Horie K, Kim M, Hatta H, Yokogoshi H. Relaxation and immunity enhancement effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) administration in humans. Biofactors. 2006;26(3):201-8. 79Yamatsu A, Yamashita Y, Maru I, Yang J, Tatsuzaki J, Kim M. - Spermidine (from rice germ extract) – Demonstrated to increase both nail growth and nail thickness.
- Biotin – May help decrease fingernail splitting and improve nail thickness.
- Solubilized keratin – Helps improve nail hardness and reduces the tendency to break.
Gut Health Supplements
Gut health has become an increasingly central focus in both preventive healthcare and daily wellness routines, as more consumers recognize its profound influence on overall health. A well-balanced gut microbiome supports not only digestion but also immune function, mood regulation, metabolic efficiency, and nutrient absorption. As a result, gut health supplements are now considered a foundational element of modern nutrition strategies.
These products work by maintaining healthy levels of beneficial gut flora, which is essential for digestive balance and effective nutrient uptake. Given its systemic influence, gut health is now widely regarded as a core indicator of long-term wellness.81Digestive Health Products Market Size, Share, and Growth Analysis. Skyquest. Retrieved June 4, 2025 from https://www.skyquestt.com/report/digestive-health-products-market. Two of the most important categories within this space are microbiome-supporting supplements and fiber-based supplements.
Microbiome-Supporting Supplements
Probiotics remain the cornerstone of gut health supplementation. These live microorganisms form the core of the gut’s microbiome, the ecosystem of beneficial bacteria and other microbes that play a critical role in maintaining digestive and immune health.
The global probiotics market is projected to grow from $86.81 billion in 2025 to $132.78 billion by 2029, reflecting a CAGR of 11.2%.82Probiotics Market Report 2025. Research and Markets. Retrieved June 4, 2025 from https://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/5744225/probiotics-market-report#:~:text=The%20probiotics%20market%20size%20has,(CAGR)%20of%209.1%25. This growth is driven by strong consumer demand and compelling scientific support. Probiotic supplements assist with digestive function by breaking down food molecules in the small intestine and interacting with bile acids to enhance fat digestion.83Plaza-Diaz J, Ruiz-Ojeda FJ, Gil-Campos M, Gil A. Mechanisms of Action of Probiotics. Adv Nutr. 2019 Jan 1;10(suppl_1):S49-S66. doi: 10.1093/advances/nmy063. Erratum in: Adv Nutr. 2020 Jul 1;11(4):1054. doi: 10.1093/advances/nmaa042. PMID: 30721959; PMCID: PMC6363529. Additionally, they help form a microbial defense barrier in the gut, producing antimicrobial substances that inhibit the growth of harmful microbes.84Lievin V, Peiffer I, Hudault S, et al. Bifidobacterium strains from resident infant human gastrointestinal microflora exert antimicrobial activity. Gut 2000;47:646-52. 85Rastall RA. Bacteria in the gut: friends and foes and how to alter the balance. J Nutr 2004;134:2022S-2026S.
Additionally, probiotics such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum have been shown to influence specific aspects of immune function, including the promotion of antibody and immunoglobulin (IgA) function.86Erickson KL, Hubbard NE. Probiotic Immunomodulation in Health and Disease. J Nutr. 2000;130:403S–409S.
It should be noted that, in addition to the gut, probiotics also offer benefits for supporting oral cavity (mouth) health. Specifically, when dissolved in the mouth rather than swallowed, the Streptococcus salivarius K12 strain helps maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the mouth, as well as in the nasopharynx (the top part of the throat connecting the nose and respiratory system), and even extends benefits to the ears.87Di Pierro F, Adami T, Rapacioli G, Giardini N, Streitberger C. Clinical evaluation of the oral probiotic Streptococcus salivarius K12 in the prevention of recurrent pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes in adults. Expert Opin Biol Ther. 2013 Mar;13(3):339-43. In addition, the Streptococcus salivarius K12 strain also helped maintain fresh breath.88Masdea L, Kulik EM, Hauser-Gerspach I, Ramseier AM, Filippi A, Waltimo T. Antimicrobial activity of Streptococcus salivarius K12 on bacteria involved in oral malodour. Fiber-Based Supplements
Dietary fiber is another critical component of gut health, supporting regular bowel function and acting as a key nutrient for probiotic bacteria. The Recommended Daily Value for dietary fiber is 28 g for adults and children 4 or more years of age91Daily Values. National Institutes of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements. Retrieved June 4, 2025 from https://ods.od.nih.gov/HealthInformation/dailyvalues.aspx., yet most individuals fall short of this target.
Fiber helps maintain digestive regularity, reduces constipation risk, and promotes satiety, which helps individuals better manage their appetite and weight. Specific prebiotic fibers serve as fuel for probiotics, enabling their survival and growth within the gut.
Psyllium husk, a well-known soluble fiber, has been shown to be an effective treatment for simple constipation, and its use has been associated with better stool consistency and a low incidence of adverse events.92Dettmar PW, Sykes J, Curr Med Res Opin (1998) 14(4):227-33. Other prebiotics, such as Oligofructose and oligofructose-enriched inulin (OEI) derived from Chicory root, have been shown to help users reduce their caloric intake.93McCann MT, Livingstone MBE, Wallace JMW, Gallagher AM, Weich RW. T1:P.082 Oligofructose-enriched Inulin supplementation decreases energy intake in overweight and obese men and women. Obes Rev. 2011;12 (Suppl. 1): 86-87. 94Verhoef SP, Meyer D, Westerterp KR. Effects of oligofructose on appetite profile, glucagon-like peptide 1 and peptide YY3-36 concentrations and energy intake. Br J Nutr. 2011 Dec;106(11):1757-62.
Prebiotic fibers, such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS), xylooligosaccharides (XOS), and acacia gum, have been shown to increase Bifidobacterium probiotic counts.95Bouhnik Y, Ouarne FF, Riottot M et al. Effects of prolonged ingestion of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) on colonic bifidobacteria, fecal enzymes and bile acids in humans. Gastroenterology 1994;106:A598. 96Finegold SM, Li Z, Summanen PH, Downes J, Thames G, Corbett K, Dowd S, Krak M, Heber D. Degradation of polysaccharides by intestinal bacterial enzymes. Am J Clin Nutr. 1978;31:S128-S130. Furthermore, galactooligosaccharides (GOS) have shown potential in supporting a healthy mood by modulating the gut microbiota.98Johnstone N, Milesi C, Burn O, van den Bogert B, Nauta A, Hart K, Sowden P, Burnet PWJ, Cohen Kadosh K. In addition, FOS, inulin, and polyphenols all have prebiotic properties that have been shown to enhance Akkermansium mucinipahila.99Zhou K. Strategies to promote abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila, an emerging probiotics in the gut, evidence from dietary intervention studies. This growth is fueled by increasing public awareness of the health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles, alongside a growing cultural emphasis on physical fitness, strength, and recovery. As more consumers adopt structured exercise routines and athletic training regimens, the demand for targeted supplementation to enhance performance and accelerate recovery has surged.
Two popular subcategories of performance and recovery supplements include creatine and nitric oxide products.
Creatine Powders
The global creatine supplements market size was valued at $1 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach 2.8 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 17.9%.101Creatine Supplements Market Size & Trends. Grand View Research. Retrieved January 14, 2025 from https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/creatine-supplements-market-report. This explosive growth is supported by a substantial body of clinical research confirming creatine’s efficacy in energy production, lean muscle development, and enhancement of athletic performance.102Kreider RB, Kalman DS, Antonio J, et al. International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: safety and efficacy of creatine supplementation in exercise, sport, and medicine. JISSN. 2017;14:18.
Several forms of creatine are available on the market, including creatine monohydrate, creatine ethyl ester, creatine hydrochloride, creatine magnesium chelate, and creatine nitrate. However, creatine monohydrate remains the most widely used and clinically validated form.103Kreider RB, Kalman DS, Antonio J, et al. International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: safety and efficacy of creatine supplementation in exercise, sport, and medicine. JISSN. 2017;14:18. It is the form most frequently utilized in human studies and has been consistently shown to increase intramuscular creatine concentrations, which directly supports strength, power output, and exercise endurance.
Beyond its role in performance enhancement, creatine has been studied for its benefits in post-exercise recovery, injury prevention, thermoregulation, rehabilitation, and even neuroprotection, making it one of the most versatile and well-researched ergogenic aids available.104Kreider RB, Kalman DS, Antonio J, et al. International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: safety and efficacy of creatine supplementation in exercise, sport, and medicine. JISSN. 2017;14:18.
A standard daily dose of creatine monohydrate is 5 grams, which is why it is typically delivered in powder form, either packaged in bottles/canisters or single-serve stick packs for on-the-go convenience.
Nitric Oxide Supplements
Nitric oxide (NO) is a naturally occurring compound in the body that promotes vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels, which leads to increased blood flow. For physically active individuals, enhanced circulation can result in a range of exercise-related benefits, including improved oxygen and nutrient delivery, reduced fatigue, and greater endurance.
Nutraceuticals that boost nitric oxide production have gained popularity for their ability to support work capacity, recovery, and exercise tolerance. Among the most effective NO-boosting supplements are beetroot extract and the amino acid L-citrulline.
For example, beetroot supplements help boost NO production because they contain nitrates105Hord NG, Tang Y, Bryan NS. Food sources of nitrates and nitrites: the physiologic context for potential health benefits. Am J Clin Nutr. 2009 Jul;90(1):1-10., which the body can convert into NO. In one study, beetroot increased total work performed and cardiac output during exercise106Zamani P, Rawat D, Shiva-Kumar P, et al. Effect of inorganic nitrate on exercise capacity in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Circulation. 2015 Jan 27;131(4):371-80., and significantly improved muscle energy use and oxygen delivery during low-oxygen exercise and subsequent recovery, as well as enhanced tolerance for high-intensity exercise.
The amino acid L-citrulline has also been shown to significantly increase NO levels and physical performance markers while improving subjective feelings of muscle fatigue and concentration immediately after exercise. It’s also been shown to support healthy circulation.107Suzuki T, Morita M, Kobayashi Y, Kamimura A. Shilajit
Shilajit is a pale-brown to blackish-brown exudate secreted from sedimentary rocks, primarily in the Himalayan region. It is composed of rock humus, mineral-rich organic matter, and microbial metabolites compressed over centuries within layers of rock and marine organisms.110Ghosal, S. The aroma principles of Gomutra and Karpuragandha Shilajit. Indian J Indg Med 1994;11:11–14.
Long revered in Ayurvedic medicine, Shilajit has been used for over 3,000 years as a rejuvenating tonic and adaptogen to support vitality, endurance, and systemic resilience.111David, F. and Vasant, L. 2001. The Yoga of Herbs. Twin Lakes, WI: Lotus Press. It remains one of the most important substances in the Ayurvedic materia medica. Modern clinical research112Rani PU, Sravanti IV, Fatima N, Muralidhar N. Salomi R. As gaming continues to gain ground as both a recreational and professional activity, demand for specialized nutrition solutions tailored to this audience is expected to grow in parallel.
Herbal Supplements
The global herbal supplements market was valued at $52.43 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $87.98 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 9%.126Global Herbal Supplements Market Overview. Market Research Future. Retrieved July 30, 2024 from https://www.marketresearchfuture.com/reports/herbal-supplements-market-3231#:~:text=Herbal%20Supplements%20Market%20Size%20was,period%20(2024%20%2D%202032).
This sustained growth is largely driven by rising consumer interest in natural health solutions and the increasing body of clinical research supporting the efficacy of herbal ingredients. As awareness expands around the preventive and therapeutic benefits of herbal supplementation, demand continues to rise across global markets.
Among the most widely studied and recognized botanicals are ginger, saffron, and turmeric—each offering unique and well-documented benefits related to inflammation, cognitive function, mood, and digestive health. These ingredients serve as cornerstone components in both traditional systems of medicine and modern integrative health protocols.
Ginger Supplements
Ginger is a traditional carminative (gas-relieving) herb.127Blumenthal M, et al, (eds), The Complete German Commission E Monographs: Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines. (1998) Austin: American Botanical Council and Boston: Integrative Medicine Communications, 425–26. Animal research has shown that ginger is capable of enhancing the activity of fat and carbohydrate digestive enzymes.128Platel K, Srinivasan K. Influence of dietary spices or their active principles on digestive enzymes of small intestinal mucosa in rats. Int J Food Sci Nutr 1996; 47(1):55-9.
It is often added to combination formulas as a means of enhancing the absorption and utilization of the other herbs in the product. Its predominant uses are associated with its ability to help reduce common, occasional nausea129Ernst E, Pittler MH. Saffron Supplements
Crocus sativus L, commonly known as saffron, is a medicinal flowering plant cultivated in many countries, including Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Spain, where it has been widely used to promote human health, particularly mood modulation.
Modern studies suggest that saffron’s mood-enhancing effects may stem from its influence on neurotransmitter levels, particularly by increasing serotonin133Hausenblas HA, Saha D, Dubyak PJ, Anton SD. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) and major depressive disorder: a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. Turmeric Supplements
According to American Botanical Council139Smith T, Bauman H, Resetar H. US Sales of Herbal Supplements Decline Slightly in 2022. HerbalGram. 2024; 139: 52-69., the top-selling herbal supplement in the U.S. Natural Channel in 2022 was turmeric. Turmeric is a bright yellow, ancient spice and a traditional remedy that has been used as a traditional medicine, condiment, and flavoring based on records dating back to 600 BCE.
Its medicinal value is essentially due to its curcuminoid content. The curcuminoids inhibit 5-lipo-oxygenase (LOX) and cyclo-oxygenase (COX), resulting in a well-established anti-inflammatory action.140Chandra D, Gupta S. Anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity of volatile oil of Curcuma longa (Haldi). Ind J Med Res 1972; 60:138-142. Turmeric and its curcuminoids also exhibit strong antioxidant activity141Toda S, Miyase T, Arich H, et al. Natural antioxidants. Antioxidative compounds isolated from rhizome of Curcuma longa L. Chem Pharmacol Bull 1985;33:1725-1728., enhance cellular resistance to oxidative damage142Mortellini R, Foresti R, Bassi R, Green CJ. Hydration Supplements
The hydration and electrolyte supplement category continues to show impressive growth. In 2024, the global market reached an estimated $36 billion, and is projected to expand to $82.7 billion by 2034, with a CAGR of 7.9%.144Hydration Supplement Market Outlook from 2024 to 2034. Future Market Insights. Retrieved May 21, 2024 from https://www.futuremarketinsights.com/reports/hydration-supplement-market#:~:text=FMI%20estimates%20the%20global%20hydration,US%24%2082.7%20billion%20by%202034. In the U.S. market alone, SPINS data from September 2024 reported a remarkable 49.3% year-over-year increase in category growth.145Casteel B. SPINS presentation. UNPA Member’s Retreat, Deer Valley, UT. September 2024.
This surge in demand is fueled by dual consumer motivations: maintaining hydration for active lifestyles and supporting skin moisture and appearance, a growing interest among beauty-conscious consumers.
- Astaxanthin – Shown to improve skin dryness, provide antioxidant protection, and support some measure of younger-looking skin.146Iwamoto T, Hosoda K, Hirano R, Kurata H, Matsumoto A, Miki W, Kamiyama M, Itakura H, Yamamoto S, Kondo K. Inhibition of low-density lipoprotein oxidation by astaxanthin. J Atheroscler Thromb. 2000;7(4):216-22. 147Yamashita E. The Effects of a Dietary Supplement Containing Astaxanthin on Skin Condition. Continuous astaxanthin intake reduces oxidative stress and reverses age-related morphological changes of residual skin surface components in middle-aged volunteers. Nutr Res. 2017 Dec;48:40-48.
- Ceramides – Demonstrated to promote skin moisturization, reduce trans epidermal water loss, and improve dryness and elasticity.149Bizot V, Cestone E, Michelotti A, Nobile V. Improving Skin Hydration and Age-related Symptoms by Oral Administration of Wheat Glucosylceramides and Digalactosyl Diglycerides: A Human Clinical Study. Cosmetics. 2017; 4:37.
- Collagen peptides – Found to promote skin moisturization and elasticity, promote collagen production in skin, and help reduce fine lines/wrinkles.150Proksch E, Schunck M, Zague V, Segger D, Degwert J, Oesser S. Oral intake of specific bioactive collagen peptides reduces skin wrinkles and increases dermal matrix synthesis. Skin Pharmacol Physiol. 2014;27(3):113-9. 151Proksch E, Segger D, Degwert J, Schunck M, Zague V, Oesser S. Oral supplementation of specific collagen peptides has beneficial effects on human skin physiology: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Skin Pharmacol Physiol. 2014;27(1):47-55.
For those with physically active lifestyles, the foundation of any effective hydration formula remains electrolytes—including sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium—which are essential for fluid balance, muscle function, and recovery during and after exercise.
As consumers increasingly seek comprehensive hydration solutions that address both performance and aesthetic wellness, this category is well-positioned for continued innovation and expansion.
2026 Supplement Manufacturing Trends
In addition to trends within specific supplement categories, there are also supplement manufacturing trends to consider as a brand owner. Some of these trends include personalization in supplement manufacturing, advanced delivery forms, and third-party certifications.
Personalization in Supplement Manufacturing
Personalized supplements that cater to an individual’s unique health needs are the wave of the future and are not yet commonplace in the dietary supplement industry. Certainly, there are some limited services offering DNA, lifestyle, and microbiome analyses, and the results of those analyses may, in part, be used to personalize supplements for consumers. Likewise, wearable devices such as the Oura ring and Apple Watch may also play a role in tailoring supplement solutions to meet specific consumer goals. AI-directed recommendations for personalized supplements have not yet achieved scientific veracity.
Meanwhile, supplement personalization is currently geared toward a focus on demographic (e.g., gender, age-group) and condition-specific/lifestyle-specific considerations. For example, as a brand owner, you may choose to develop active lifestyle products for women in a specific age group. To those women, such products will be personalized for their needs. Similarly, giving careful consideration to the white space in the industry and developing products to meet currently unmet needs for specific populations is a viable approach to personalized supplementation.
Advanced Delivery Forms
Before exploring emerging delivery systems, it’s important to understand how current formats are performing in the market. According to SPINS data for the 52 weeks ending June 16, 2024152Casteel B. SPINS presentation. UNPA Member’s Retreat, Deer Valley, UT. September 2024., the leading delivery forms for dietary supplements by dollar share are:
- Gummies: 18.9%
- Capsules (gelatin and vegan): 14.7%
- Tablets: 13%
- Softgels: 11.5%
- Powders: 7.2%
However, the year-over-year percentage change in dollar sales tells a more nuanced story:
- Powders: +8%
- Capsules: +5.3%
- Tablets: -0.9%
- Gummies: -8%
This data suggests that powders and capsules are trending upward, while gummies are seeing a notable decline and tablets are experiencing a slight downward trend. For brands looking to optimize product format based on consumer preferences, powders and capsules are currently the most promising conventional options.
But what about other advanced delivery forms such as chewable, effervescent and fast-melt tablets? Many consumers have difficulty swallowing pills153Hinote T. Trouble swallowing pills? Here’s what you can do about it. Orlando Health. Retrieved July 30, 2024 from https://www.orlandohealth.com/content-hub/trouble-swallowing-pills-heres-what-you-can-do-about-it#:~:text=Whether%20the%20cause%20is%20emotional,hint%20at%20something%20more%20serious. and/or experience pill fatigue from having to swallow too many conventional tablets or capsules. This has caused many consumers to seek alternative delivery forms for dietary supplements154Schultz H. Pill fatigue is driving innovation in space between function foods and supplements, experts say. November 20, 2014. Retrieved October 13, 2019 from https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2014/11/20/Pill-fatigue-is-driving-innovation-in-space-between-functional-foods-and-supplements-experts-say.—such as chewable, effervescent, and fast-melt tablets.
- Chewable tablets – Chewable tablets that are specially formulated to deliver their nutraceuticals within a matrix of highly palatable flavor options, sweetening options, a desirable mouth feel, and good stability. One scientific journal described this delivery form in this way: “Chewable tablets are versatile dosage forms that combine the manufacturing and stability advantages of solid dosage products while offering beneficial organoleptic [flavor/taste] and administration benefits.”155Antil A, Kahiy M, Tomar D. An Overview on Efficacy of Chewable Tablets in Improving Oral Drug Delivery. Systemic Reviews in Pharmacy. 2023; 14(9): 571-7.
- Effervescent tablets – Effervescent tablets are typically round tablets that are larger than regular tablets and are designed to be placed in a glass of water, where they fizz and dissolve into the liquid. Microencapsulated and controlled-release effervescent tablets offer the potential for faster absorption of active ingredients. Research has demonstrated that effervescent tablets offer superior absorption in some cases. For example, one study156Joshi SS, Sawant SV, Shedge A, Halpner AD. Comparative bioavailability of two novel coenzyme Q10 preparations in humans. Int J Clin Pharmacol Ther 2003;41(1):42-8. found that effervescent and fast-melting Q10 were more rapidly absorbed than softgel and powder-filled hard-shell capsules. Another study157Sadideen H, Swaminathan R. Effect of acute oral calcium load on serum PTH and bone resorption in young healthy subjects: an overnight study. Eur J Clin Nutr 2004;58(12):1661-5. reported that an effervescent form of calcium resulted in significant increases in serum calcium, a reflection of effective calcium absorption via effervescence.
- Fast-melt tablets – Fast-melt tablets dissolve quickly in the mouth (within a minute or so) without the need for water. Research has also demonstrated enhanced bioavailability with fast-melt tablets. One study found that when used in fast-melt tablet form, vitamin B12 had good bioavailability, raising serum levels by as much as fourfold.158Delpre G. Sublingual therapy for cobalamin deficiency as an alternative to oral and parenteral cobalamin Supplementation. Lancet. 1999;354:740-750. A similar human study159Sharabi A, Cohen E, Sulkes J, Garty M. Replacement therapy for vitamin B12 deficiency: comparison between the sublingual and oral route. Br J Clin Pharmacol. 2003 Dec;56(6):635-8. also found that fast-melt tablets increased serum concentrations by about threefold. Good results were also seen with fast-melt melatonin tablets.160SaberMoghaddam M, Sheybani S, Bakhtiari E, Shakiba M. The Effect of Preoperative Sublingual Melatonin on Postoperative Pain Severity in Patients Undergoing Colorectal Surgery: A Triple-Blinded Randomized Trial. Med J Islam Repub Iran. 2022 Aug 10;36:90.
Third-Party Certifications
Manufacturers often claim to follow FDA nutraceutical guidelines, operate out of quality contract manufacturing facilities, or perform cGMP contract manufacturing. However, these claims do not guarantee adherence to cGMPs. True assurance comes from GMP certification.
A GMP-certified facility has been audited for cGMPs by a credible third-party agency, ensuring compliance with industry standards. Among the best of the GMP certifications is the NSF GMP certification. GMP certification should be the minimum expected. Manufacturers can go beyond this by also being NSF Certified for Sport. This certification provides athletes, coaches, dieticians, and consumers with extra assurance about supplement safety. In addition, manufacturers can offer Kosher, Halal, and certified organic products, meeting various consumer preferences.
Another consideration is the rare but globally recognized standard in the food and supplement industry known as FSSC 22000 certification for food safety. All these certifications can potentially give your products a competitive edge.
Conclusion
As the nutraceutical landscape continues to evolve, staying ahead of 2026 supplement trends is essential for brand owners, manufacturers, and marketers alike.
With category growth in areas such as plant-based proteins, nootropics, gut health, and hydration, alongside rising demand for advanced delivery forms and third-party certifications, the market is becoming both more innovative and more competitive.
Consumers are increasingly informed and selective, favoring products that combine efficacy, transparency, and convenience. By aligning product development with emerging science, evolving consumer preferences, and validated quality standards, companies can position themselves for success in the next wave of supplement innovation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Supplement Trends for 2026
How are personalized supplements becoming more popular?
Personalized supplements are gaining in popularity with the idea that services offering DNA, lifestyle, and microbiome analyses, as well as wearable devices such as the Oura ring and Apple Watch, may help provide guidance on personalized supplements for consumers. However, this goal hasn’t been fully achieved. Meanwhile, consumers can look for supplements that are formulated with a focus on demographic (e.g., gender, age-group) and condition-specific/lifestyle-specific considerations that correlate with their personal needs.
What are the benefits of clean-label supplements?
There is no official definition of “clean label”. However, products with the absence of additives (or at least their minimal use) are generally considered to be clean label. An example would be the elimination of excipients such as magnesium stearate in favor of acceptable alternatives (e.g., rice-based materials). Also, the use of natural ingredients and sustainable, environmentally friendly positioning are considered clean-label friendly. In fact, products are increasingly deemed to be clean label if they carry environmental benefits.
Are there any dietary supplements that are particularly popular among athletes?
Two of the most popular, commonly used, and scientifically validated supplements are protein, such as whey or pea protein isolate, and creatine monohydrate. For example, pea protein has been shown to have strong anti-fatigue effects, decrease lactic acid, increase muscle and liver glycogen, improve insulin levels, and offer strong antioxidant and immune activity. Likewise, creatine monohydrate has been shown to promote energy production, build lean muscle, and support athletic performance, while enhancing post-exercise recovery, injury prevention, thermoregulation, rehabilitation, and neuroprotection.
