Exploring the Trends for 2025 in The Dietary Supplement Market

The global dietary supplements market continues to grow by leaps and bounds. In 2022 it was valued at $360.2 billion, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7%. By 2032, the market is expected to reach a valuation of $688.9 billion.[1]

However, from year to year, the trends in dietary supplements are not always the same, including those experiencing a growth phase. Consequently, staying ahead of the curve is important to understanding and capitalizing on upcoming industry trends.

This article will provide insight into the dietary supplement trends we expect to reign supreme in 2025.

The Evolving U.S. Supplement Market in 2025

According to Grand View Research[2], North America accounted for a revenue share of 33% in 2023 for the dietary supplement market, most of which came from the U.S.

Factors fueling product interest in the U.S. include growing healthcare costs, changes in food laws affecting label and product claims, rapid advances in science and technology, the rising geriatric population, and growing interest in attaining wellness through diet.

Likewise, Valuates Reports[3] indicates that rapid urbanization, rise in disposable income, and growing awareness of health issues are also impacting supplement industry statistics in the U.S.

Supplement Types in High Demand for 2025

Drawing from comprehensive market research across multiple industry sources, we predict these dietary supplement products and categories will experience explosive growth in 2025.

  • Collagen Supplements
  • Pet Supplements
  • Sports Nutrition Supplements
  • Vitamin D Supplements
  • Herbal Supplements
  • Nootropics Supplements
  • Beauty From Within Supplements
  • Pre-, Pro- & Post-biotics
  • Women’s Health Supplements
  • Green Foods Supplements
  • GLP-1 Support Supplements for Weight Loss/Metabolic Health
  • Organic & Plant-based Supplements
  • Immune Health Supplements

Collagen Supplements

The global collagen market size was estimated at $10.08 billion in 2022 and it is forecasted to hit about $23.02 billion by 2032 with a CAGR of 8.9% during the forecast period 2023 to 2032.[4]

One of the reasons for the popularity of collagen is an aging population. Consider that the most obvious outward sign of aging is a change in the appearance of skin. As collagen levels decline, an increase in fine lines and wrinkles and a decrease in skin elasticity is evident. Likewise, a decline in collagen can affect joint health, which is another issue for an aging population.

Collagen is available in various forms, including bovine (cattle), porcine (pigs), chicken sternal cartilage, and marine (fish). There is also a grass-fed bovine option, which is a niche market consideration. Recently, “vegan collagen” has been introduced, though plants do not contain collagen. These vegan products are generally combinations of amino acids that mimic the amino acid profile of real collagen.

Collagen supplements can be manufactured in various formats, and we’ve listed some popular ones below. Additionally, supplement brand owners need to educate themselves about the different types of collagens that can be used when formulating your product.

Regarding capsules, you’ll need to use collagen materials showing effectiveness in a 1 or 2.5 g dose. Even then, the 1 g dose will require a 2-capsule serving size, and the 2.5 g dose will require a 4-capsule serving size. Liquid collagen products offer some advantages, particularly ease of swallowing, but stability is typically more challenging. Powders are one of the most popular dietary supplement delivery forms for collagen. A powdered product has the advantage of being able to be mixed with a beverage, including water, juice, coffee, etc. Gummies are certainly a popular delivery form, but it is difficult to provide a clinically relevant dose of collagen in gummies.

Gummies vs. Chewable Tablets

Speaking of gummies, it should be noted that, in general, chewable tablets have several distinct advantages over gummies.

One such advantage is stability. In gummy manufacturing, introducing nutraceuticals into the gummy matrix must be done near the end of the manufacturing process since the matrix is too hot before then, it will likely have nutraceutical stability. In the case of some nutraceuticals, such as probiotics, stability may be negatively impacted even when nutraceuticals are introduced at the end of the process. These are not issues in chewable tablets.

Furthermore, it is relatively easy to adjust the size of the chewable tablet to accommodate a larger nutraceutical payload, whereas gummies have limited size options. Likewise, the R&D process/formulation is longer with gummies, but much quicker with chewables.

Also, gummies can melt in their bottle if the storage temperature is too high, which (again) is not a problem with chewable tablets.

Pet Supplements

According to Grand View Research[5], the global size of the pet supplements market was estimated at $2.49 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.9% from 2024 to 2030.

The rising demand for the market can be attributed to a rise in pet humanization (i.e., the practice in pet culture of treating companion animals with a level of care, attention, and luxury relatively higher than for the average domesticated animal), leading to significant expenditure on pet food, supplements, and other related products to keep them active and healthy.

Supplements enhance pets’ concentration, focus, and energy levels, strengthen their immune system, and promote heart health. Anti-stress, anti-anxiety, or calming supplements, as well as supplements for joint health and skin and coat, are also in high demand and are anticipated to gain further traction among pet owners.

The increasing number of pets across the globe is driving the demand for pet supplements. For instance, according to the U.S. Pet Food Industry’s 2020 pet ownership study, pet ownership rose from 67% of households to an all-time high of 70%, as confirmed by the American Pet Product Association APPA.

These statistics foretell high market growth over the forecast period.[7]

Sport Nutrition Supplements

Sports nutrition supplements are popular among athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and people whose job involves significant physical activity.

According to Grand View Research[8], the size of the global sports nutrition market was valued at $45.24 billion in 2023 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2024 to 2030.

Some of the many nutraceuticals with good science for sports performance and fitness include:

  • Black Ginger Extract – The polymethoxyflavones in Black Ginger Extract have been shown to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and physical performance by improving oxidative stress and lactate[9], as well as supporting muscle strength, endurance and speed[10] [11].
  • Creatine Monohydrate – In addition to athletic and exercise improvement, research has shown that creatine supplementation may enhance post-exercise recovery, injury prevention, thermoregulation, rehabilitation, and neuroprotection.[12]
  • Whey Protein – Clinical research shows that taking whey protein isolate daily in combination with strength training for 6 to 10 weeks increased lean body mass, strength, and muscle hypertrophy compared to placebo.[13] [14] [15] Clear whey protein has a clean, clear mix that offers a competitive advantage over other whey protein products.
  • Beta-Alanine – This unique amino acid has been shown to help increase exercise capacity and decrease muscle fatigue[16] [17] [18] [19].
  • Hydration-promoting ingredients – Electrolyte-replacing minerals, such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium are commonly used in hydration products. Other ingredients that promote hydration, such as hyaluronic acid, may also be included.
  • Paraxanthine – Paraxanthine is a primary metabolite of caffeine, sharing many of its effects. Some research suggests that paraxanthine may be a safer alternative to caffeine [i].
  • Calcium HMB – This metabolite of the amino acid leucine has extensive research demonstrating effectiveness in helping maintain lean muscle [ii].

Vitamin D Supplements

The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency (i.e., inadequate levels) is significant. The journal Nutrients[20] indicated that 29% of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient and an additional 41% is vitamin D insufficient. This is problematic considering the multiple roles that vitamin D plays in human health and wellness, including facilitating calcium absorption, promoting bone health[21], and demonstrating value for the support of blood sugar, insulin, heart health, cholesterol, intestinal health, liver health, thyroid health, menstrual health, fertility (women and men), ovarian health, urinary health, immune health, muscle comfort, age-related muscle health, joint health, moodiness, anxiety (stress related), upper respiratory health, lung health, acne (non-cystic), skin comfort, and testosterone.[22][23][24] [25] [26] [27]

Given these factors, it’s no surprise that the vitamin D market was valued at $1.69 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.48% through 2032[28].

It should be noted that most of the vitamin D sold to consumers is vitamin D3. This is significant because there are two primary forms of vitamin D available for use in dietary supplements: cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2).

Cholecalciferol is the form of vitamin D made in the human body and is more active than ergocalciferol. Vitamin D2 potency is less than one-third that of vitamin D3[29]—so D3 is generally considered the preferred form of vitamin D. Vitamin D3 can be used in an oil or powder form (encapsulated). Furthermore, it is available in synthetic form (lanolin conversion to D3 in a laboratory) or as a natural vegan extracted from reindeer lichen a.k.a., Cladonia rangeiferina—which is also sustainable and eco-friendly.

Herbal Supplements

The herbal supplements market has exhibited consistent growth over the years. According to Market Research Future[30], in 2023, the size of the herbal supplements market was valued at $48.1 billion and projected to grow from $52.43 billion in 2024 to $87.98 billion by 2032 with a CAGR of 9.01% during the forecast period.

Although generally used to treat illness, herbal supplements offer a range of general health and wellness benefits. Demand for herbal supplements, particularly in emerging economies, is anticipated to be driven by rising disposable income levels and increased spending on health and wellness.

The herbal supplements market segmentation includes echinacea, moringa, flaxseeds, turmeric, ginger, and ginseng. The echinacea segment held the majority share in 2023, contributing to around ~25-27% of the herbal supplements market revenue. In the U.S., echinacea is the most visible and third-most popular herbal supplement in mainstream retail outlets. The increase in clinical studies demonstrating Echinacea’s health benefits also fueled demand, contributing to the segment’s highest revenue share.[31]

According to the American Botanical Council[32], there were some notable increases in the sales of specific herbal supplements in the U.S. Psyllium outperformed Elderberry, and psyllium had the highest growth in sales within the mainstream channel.

Nootropics Supplements

Nootropics are supplements shown to promote cognitive health and energy levels. According to Future Market Insights[33], the nootropic supplement market is expected to expand from $2.2 billion in 2023 to $4.18 billion by 2033. From 2023 to 2033, global nootropic supplement sales are likely to soar at 9.0% CAGR.

Well-established nootropic supplements include caffeine and Ginkgo biloba. However, new interest in the category has garnished attention from students, seniors, and sports enthusiasts alike for next-gen products such as L-theanine taken with caffeine. This combination may conjure up feelings of calmness and may be linked to increased creativity[34] [35] [36] [37] [38] [39]. Creatine, widely used in the sports nutrition world, provides the mental energy many consumers want without the negative side effects such as jitters and insomnia[40].

Other evidence-based nootropic ingredients include:

  • Lion’s mane extract – A mushroom shown to improve working memory, attention, and reaction time within 2 hours.[41] [42]
  • Bacopa leaf extract – An herb shown to enhance cognitive performance, reduce forgetfulness, and support learning and memory.[43] [44] [45] [46] [47]
  • Asian Ginseng root extract – Shown to improve the speed of mental performance and reduce mental fatigue within 60 minutes. [48] [49]
  • Ashwagandha extract – In addition to its anti-stress and adaptogenic properties, some research [iii] has demonstrated that a specific ashwagandha extract is capable of cognitive-enhancing effects.

Beauty-From-Within

The size of the global beauty-from-within supplement market was valued at $3.56 billion in 2022, and it is expected to reach $9.22 billion in 2031 with a CAGR of 11.4% during the forecast period of 2023 to 2031.[50] This category is composed of skin, hair, and nails.

Skin Health

Skin health supplements typically address certain aspects of skin appearance. Most frequently, this tends to include fine lines and wrinkles, dryness/moisturization, and skin elasticity. Some products also address other aspects of skin appearance such as age spots/hyperpigmentation, skin redness, and non-cystic acne. In all these cases, there are nutraceuticals with human clinical research behind them to promote these aspects of healthy skin appearance. These include:

  • Collagen peptides – Promote collagen production in the skin, help reduce fine lines/wrinkles, and promote skin moisturization and elasticity.
  • Ceramides – Substantially promotes skin moisturization, reduces transepidermal water loss, and improves dryness and elasticity.
  • Astaxanthin – Antioxidant protection, suppresses damage to skin barrier function, helps reduce fine lines/wrinkles, and promotes skin moisturization and elasticity.
  • Hyaluronic acid – Binds to water to help maintain hydration.
  • Coriander seed oil – Helps decrease skin redness and soothes sensitive skin.
  • Blood orange extract – Helps reduce UV-induced age spots and skin redness.
  • Grapeseed extract – Helps reduce hyperpigmentation.
  • Zinc – Helps improve non-cystic acne.
  • Guggulsterones – Helps improve non-cystic acne.

Hair Health

Hair health supplements, likewise, address two major aspects of hair appearance: hair growth/shedding, and hair thickness. There are a few select nutraceuticals with human clinical research to promote these aspects of healthy hair appearance. These include:

  • Biotin – It’s important to note that biotin supplementation only improves hair health if you have a biotin deficiency, which is often characterized by hair loss. Otherwise, there is no evidence that biotin supplementation affects hair growth.
  • Spermidine – Supports the anagen phase of hair growth, reduces hair shedding, and promotes hair thickness.
  • Pomegranate extract – Helps promote hair growth and hair thickness.
  • Solubilized keratin – Helps reduce hair shedding, supports the hair cycle, and supports stronger, shinier hair.

Nail Health

Nail health supplements address the following major aspects of nail appearance: splitting, thickness, hardness, and tendency to break. There are a couple of select nutraceuticals with human clinical research to promote these aspects of healthy nail appearance. These include:

  • Biotin – May help decrease fingernail splitting and improve nail thickness.
  • Solubilized keratin – Helps improve nail hardness and reduces the tendency to break.

Pre-, Pro- & Post-Biotics

The microbiome, which consists of the trillions of microbes and bacteria living in our gut, plays a crucial role in supporting gut health, immunity, and more. Microbiome support supplements usually contain one or a combination of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics.

Prebiotics (e.g., fructooligosaccharides and galactooligosaccharides) are specialized fibers that serve as a source of food for probiotic microorganisms. Probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum) are live microorganisms residing in our gut that confer a health benefit. Postbiotics are pasteurized or heat-treated probiotics that still offer health benefits even though they are no longer alive.

Each of these ‘biotic’ subcategories is trending. The global prebiotic fiber market is expected to reach a valuation of $6.67 billion by 2023, recording a CAGR of 6.3% from 2023 to 2033.[i] The size of the global probiotics market is expected to reach $213.1 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 12.4% from 2023 to 2032.[ii] The postbiotic market is estimated to be valued at $10.8 million in 2024[iii] and is expected to register a CAGR of 10.9% from 2024 to 2034, reaching a valuation of $30.5 million by 2034.

Women’s Health Supplements

The women’s health supplements market was valued at $41.1 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $66.5 billion by 2032 with a projected CAGR of 5.6% over the forecast period.[i]

Supplements for women are inclusive of those that address:

  • Menstrual/Premenstrual health – Chaste berry extract has extensive research supporting menstrual health, as well as a reduction in some premenstrual symptoms [iv] v. Vitamin B6 [vi] and magnesium [vii] have similar research.
  • Pregnancy – Prenatal multivitamins are widely recognized for their value during pregnancy, and the addition of nutraceuticals such as ginger extract may help reduce nausea associated with morning sickness of pregnancy [viii].
  • Menopause/post-menopause – Menopausal/postmenopausal symptoms are a natural part of the lifecycle. Nutraceuticals like black cohosh extract have been shown to help reduce associated symptoms [ix].

Green Foods Supplements

The global greens supplement market was estimated to reach $563.3 million in 2022 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.8 %, reaching around $818.0 million by 2032 [x]. Green food products are typically found in a powdered drink mix containing multiple nutraceuticals, including green superfoods. Green superfoods will be defined as algae (chlorella, spirulina, etc.), grasses (alfalfa, barley grass, wheat grass, etc.), common green vegetables (broccoli, spinach, etc.), and sprouted versions of grass and green vegetables. Powdered green superfood drink mixes may contain other nutraceuticals such as fruit powders, herbs, micronutrients, enzymes, and pre-and probiotics. While not green superfoods, these other nutraceuticals may provide benefits depending upon the forms and amounts of each present in the product.

Generally, people use powdered green superfood drink mixes with the expectation that it is going to provide them with one or more of the following benefits:

  • Compensate for a lack of vegetables/leafy green vegetables in their diet,
  • Support and/or promote some aspect of the body’s detoxification process,
  • Add an alkalizing component to their diet to help prevent disease,
  • Promote some other aspects of human health.

GLP-1 Support Supplements for Weight Loss/Metabolic Health

GLP-1 support supplements are a new category, so there is currently no data on their market growth. These supplements are designed to support the function of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that regulates blood sugar, appetite, and digestion, and thus has applications for weight loss and metabolic health. Some research suggests that certain nutraceuticals may help promote GLP-1 [xi]:

  • Berberine
  • Curcumin
  • Cinnamon
  • Soybean
  • Resveratrol

Organic & Plant-Based Supplements

Although sales numbers associated with organic supplements are unavailable, as the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. food industry, organic food sales increase by double digits annually[51]. U.S. sales of certified organic products approached $70 billion in 2023, a new record for the sector[52]. It can be inferred from this that organic supplements are also trending.

Likewise, the sale of plant-based supplements is growing by leaps and bounds, with notable trends in the fall months driving this expansion. Consumers prefer supplements made from natural, plant-based ingredients, perceiving them as gentler on the body and more easily absorbed.

In addition, concerns about health and environmental sustainability drive the shift toward plant-based supplements. Consider the 2023 global vegan protein market is estimated at $10.8 billion, and is expected to reach $22 billion by 2033, experiencing a CAGR of 7.4%.[53] Also, natural vitamin sources, inclusive of whole food-derived nutraceuticals, are expected to reach $15.79 billion in value by 2030, at a CAGR of 6.4% during the forecast period[54]. Furthermore, whole food-derived nutraceuticals are generally plant-based (vegan), and the vegan supplements market is projected to register a CAGR of 6.7% through 2028[55].

Significant opportunities exist for product innovation using plant-based nutraceuticals. For example:

  • Vitamin D3 – Although typically synthesized for sheep wool lanolin, natural vegan sources of vitamin D3 are available from the lichen Cladonia rangiferina. Make your multivitamin vegan-friendly with this one small change.
  • Vitamin K2 (as MK-7) is well-known for its cardiovascular and bone health benefits. Instead of using a synthetic source, consider using K2 fermented from natto or soy-free chickpeas.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) – A huge category unto itself, the O3FA EPA and DHA are typically derived from fish oil or krill. However, algae sources of these O3FA are available, offering a vegan alternative.
  • Pea protein – Pea protein concentrates are an excellent vegan source of protein providing additional satiety, thermogenic, and cardiovascular benefits.

Immune Health Supplements

The global size of the immune health supplements market is projected to grow from $25.92 billion in 2024 to $44.04 billion by 2032, with a CAGR of 6.9% during the forecast period[i]. The nutraceuticals in demand include:

  • Vitamin C – Recognized for its benefits in supporting respiratory/immune health.
  • Vitamin D – Previously discussed.
  • Zinc – Affects multiple aspects of the immune system, from the barrier of the skin to cellular function.
  • Colostrum – Bovine colostrum has been extensively studied in humans, including its effects on immune health, helping to modulate white blood cells and positive impact cytokines[ii].
  • Bee propolis – This material contains a range of natural compounds which have been shown immunomodulatory properties[iii].
  • Postbiotics – Postbiotics are thermally treated probiotics. Specific strains have demonstrated an ability to augment acquired immunity, promoting quality of life[iv].

Personalization Takes Center Stage

According to FactViewResearch, the Global Personalized Nutrition and Supplements Market was valued at $14.6 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach a valuation of $37.3 billion by 2032 growing at a CAGR of 11.48% during the forecast period 2024 – 2032.[56]

Personalized nutrition is a shift from the standard solution of one-size-fits-all to individualized strategies. Although genetic testing has been used to achieve this goal, digital platforms, AI and data analytics are being utilized to offer personalized recommendations. Essentially, user behavior is analyzed, and supplement recommendations are made accordingly.[57] Some companies utilizing online questionnaires to assess and make personalized supplement recommendations.

Sustainable Packaging and Clean Label

Concerning environmental impact, sustainable packaging has also been trending. In this context, sustainability is defined as being easily recycled or composted. Likewise, a package made from recycled materials is also considered sustainable. Also, a “right-sized” package—rather than providing bottles and boxes larger than needed for the tablets, capsules, or powders within—is also deemed sustainable.  Additionally, many companies are replacing plastic scoops with household measuring spoons or cups to reduce their carbon footprint. Finally, packaging that produces fewer carbon emissions is considered more sustainable.

Although there is no official definition of “clean label”, three primary meanings that consumers associate with this term include the absence of additives (or at least their minimal use), the use of natural ingredients, and sustainable, environmentally friendly positioning. Products are increasingly deemed to be clean-labeled if they carry environmental benefits. Environmental messages are gaining ground at 16% CAGR.[58]

Regarding additives, eliminating excipients like magnesium stearate in favor of acceptable alternatives (e.g., rice-based materials) is considered clean label. Additionally, while not strictly necessary, using organic and non-GMO ingredients aligns well with the clean label paradigm.

Ethical Sourcing Matters

As with all industries, ethical sourcing issues must be considered in the dietary supplement industry. To be part of the solution, companies must commit to ethical sourcing of raw materials.

According to Greenly, ethical sourcing is defined as “a responsible and sustainable method to organize a supply chain and their original sources of raw materials.”

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of entities in the public sector to monitor that the products they are acquiring have been ethically sourced—in addition to ensuring that the health and safety of employees is protected in the process.”[59]

Besides intangible benefits, ethical sourcing offers economic advantages too. This includes risk mitigation associated with reputation damage, which can result in financial losses.

In addition to being sustainable, it is important to consider that raw materials used in your products are produced using only Fair and Ethical methods and comply with current Governmental Environmental, Health & Safety Regulations both domestically and internationally.

Fair and Ethical means that the ingredients are produced using methods that do not compromise the welfare of the people or environments associated with their production, and promote the sustainability of the people, their environments, and their culture. It also means that all workers involved in agriculture and processing of the material(s) are paid fairly, not subject to forced labor, and do not fit the UNICEF definition of child labor conditions. Lastly, fair and ethical means the workers are not subjected to cruel or dangerous working conditions, and that sustainable agricultural practices are employed.
